Good wishes for a Happy Holiday Season and New Year from Dancers’ Studio West

Dear friends of Dancers Studio West,

I’m writing you from the halls of the beautiful and vibrant cSPACE, where we are in residence for the week in our first ever creative Lab. With co-facilitator Vancouver-based artist Justine A. Chambers, we’ve been hosting the research of 4 international choreographers, working with 8 dancers from across the country. What does dance creation research look like? It is oriented around and articulated through our bodies, and can address a myriad of questions related to form and function, physical mechanics, space and time, being and how we are with others, how to make, what to make and why it should be dance? Among many, many other questions. The lab is intended to give artists studio time and intellectual companionship needed to develop the foundations of a sustainable artistic practice. It’s been a heady and muscular experience for everyone involved, and a great deal of thoughtful choreography has been made. What an inspiring way to finish off 2018!

On that note, I wish you warmth and happiness over the holidays. Like me, if you have an abundance of that, consider sharing what you got with others who have less.

Sasha Ivanoch

Lab participants at work are choreographers Helen Cox, Elizabeth Emond-Stevenson, Marynia Fekecz and Su-Lin Tseng,  and dancers Heather Thomson, Sylvie Moquin, Nicole Charlton Goodbrand, Aimee Rushton, Meghann Michalsky, Kyra Newton, Davida Monk and Robert Abubo. With facilitators Sasha Ivanochko and Justine A. Chambers.

The Study Group

The Study Group is a reading group, facilitated by Artistic Director Sasha Ivanochko, analyzing texts related to art practice and philosophy. Sasha will select excerpts from a book to be read in advance and explored at each session.

If you are interested in participating in what promises to be a stimulating discussion group, please join our Facebook Group for this series.

Our first event for The Study Group will be Thursday, January 10th, 7:00 – 8:30PM, @ cSPACE King Edward.

Information on the readings & RSVP requirements will be provided to those who are interested on the closed Facebook Group. We look forward to seeing you there!
