The Dance Action Lab is an eight-week program that focuses on the choreographic development and technical training of Dance Action Group members and culminates in a production. Guest artists are engaged as dancers to complement the ensemble such as this year’s Jared Ebell and Su Lin Tseng. Integrated into the Dance Action Lab are daily Open Company Technique Classes, mid-process Informal Showings and two programs for young professionals: the Lab Emerging Artist Program (LEAP), which supports two apprentice dancers, and the Professional Bridging Program with Winnipeg’s School of Contemporary Dancers, which brings young artists to Calgary to fulfill various roles in the process.
The Lab Emerging Artist Program (LEAP) is made possible with the financial support of RBC through its RBC Emerging Artist Project. Emerging contemporary dancers compete for one of two positions in this program each Fall, and are selected by a committee made up of the Artistic Director and members of the Dance Action Group. They train daily with the professional ensemble in technique class, participate in rehearsals and are groomed for performing roles in at least one Dance Action Lab production.
