A couple of weeks ago, I was privileged to have the opportunity to travel to Lethbridge to get to know the dance scene there. It was fun to connect over lunch with artists Geordan Olsen, Annie Martin, Catherine McLaughlin and Betty Paulson. It was an inspiring meeting as each artist described their aspirations for their small but energetic community. A special shout out to Catherine and Betty for taking me on a tour of various rehearsal and performance venues!
Please note, due to a typo on the initial announcement, we are extending the application deadline for The Research Lab. The new deadline is May 28th. We also have two new calls for dancer positions. Please see the details below!
I’d like to thank our Board member Diane Lee for donating two comfy office chairs and a plant. We are still looking for a small couch, shelves, desks and a meeting table. If you have any leads or something you don’t have space for anymore, please think of us. Thank you for your consideration.

Job Opportunities for Dancers!
The Research Lab
Dancers’ Studio West is seeking letters of interest from professional dancers to participate in our Research Lab taking place September 16-20th, 2019. We are seeking dancers with at least 3 years of professional experience, with a range of technical and artistic skills.
What the Lab is: This week-long project makes space for choreographers to work with professional dancers on a specific aesthetic, methodological or theoretical question without the pressure to produce a completed choreography. It’s a program that fosters creative risk-taking and deep research in a safe and supportive environment.
Contract details: Dancers will be paired to work with one Lab choreographer at cSPACE King Edward for 15 hours over 5 days. The role of the dancer is to interpret the choreographer’s ideas quickly and accurately, so that the choreographer can focus on their research and developing their craft. The research of each choreographer will be shown in camera to the other Lab participants. Research will be facilitated by Artistic Director Sasha Ivanochko and Vancouver-based artist Justine A. Chambers.
Dancers will be paid a rate of $450 and are required to be available for all of the hours they are scheduled (detailed schedule TBA). This is a stand alone contract.
If you are interested in being considered for this project, please e-mail a three-page CV detailing your performance experience to email@example.com by June 1st, 2019.
Emerging Artist Program (formally known as LEAP)
Dancers’ Studio West is seeking two Alberta-based pre-professional contemporary dance artists to participate in our Emerging Artist Program as part of the 2019/2020 Artist in Residence (AIR) and Associate Artist’s (AA) creation and production projects.
Two emerging artists will have the opportunity to be part of the three new creations choreographed by our incoming AIRs and Associate Artist Linnea Swan. Dancers will have active roles in the AIRS process, researching movement material, improvising, developing and performing choreography in an informal setting. Emerging artists will also have the opportunity to assist our AA’s process, and develop organizational, rehearsal direction, production and dramaturgical skills.
The contract length is still TBA, but will not be lesser than 4 weeks spread over the year. This is a paid position. It is possible that the contract will be renewed for the following year.
Interested dancers can apply with:
- current CV (including contact information and email address)
- Vimeo or Youtube link of recent dance performance (clearly indicate which dancer you are if this is a group work)
- 1-page Statement of Interest
- a letter of reference
Please submit your application to firstname.lastname@example.org by June 7th, 2019.
Emerging Artists will be chosen by the AIRs and AA in consultation with Artistic Director Sasha Ivanochko.
