36th Annual Alberta Dance Festival

DANCING HOME: CELEBRATING CANADIAN ARTISTS

August 28 to September 16th, 2017

AADF 2017 launches DSW’s 17/18 artistic season with two weeks of performances, September 7th – 9th & September 14th– 16th at the Victor Mitchell Pumphouse Theatre. The Festival will include works of 10 – 20 minutes in length and is open to emerging choreographers practicing in any dance discipline.

DANCING HOME
The 36h Annual Alberta Dance Festival (AADF) DANCING HOME is aspiring to present new works of complete Canadian content in celebration of Canada’s sesquicentennial. Interested choreographers are asked to select the work of a Governor General award-winning visual or literary artist as the inspiration for their Festival pieces. In order to complete the Canadian content challenge, the Artistic Director and Dance Action Group will match an existing music composition by a Calgary area composer to each successful DANCING HOME candidate. Composers will be available for consultation throughout the creative process. Candidates will be interested to learn that included among the Calgary area composers is the 2015 & 2016 Festival Music Advisors cohort from the University of Calgary School of Creative and Performing Arts.

Special note for DANCING HOME: Applicants are encouraged to conceive of works with small or large casts, in which they themselves are not dancing.  Proposals for solo works will be highly competitive, as a limited number will be programmed.

Over and over one must ask oneself the question: What do I want to express? …There is something additional, a breath that draws your breath into its breathing, a heartbeat that pounds on yours, a recognition of the oneness of all things.”
Emily Carr, Painter

We are lonely for where we are. Poetry helps us cope. Poetry is where we go when we want to know the world as lover.”
Tim Lilburn, Poet & Essayist

My…images are meant as metaphors …. they search for a dialogue between attraction and repulsion, seduction and fear.”
Edward Burtynsky, Photographer

CRITICAL DIAOLOGUE
The Critical Dialogue Series comprises a variety of opportunities for choreographers to develop critical distance and to strengthen both their processes and final works. All Festival choreographers are invited to observe up to 10 hours of creation during the Dance Action Lab, May 29 – July 22, 2017. Prior to the Creative Intensive, each Festival choreographer is assigned a Dance Action Group member as an Outside Eye. All Festival artists take part in Dancers’ Studio West’s first Undressing the Dance Public Dialogue of the 2017/18 season that will focus on the works in DANCING HOME.

CREATIVE INTENSIVE
All DANCING HOME choreographers and their casts commit to participating in six full days of intense creative activity from August 28 to September 2. The Creative Intensive includes daily technique classes, rehearsals, showings, choreographic experiments and outside eye practice. Led by Artistic Director Monk and the Dance Action Group this environment works to develop Festival choreographies to their highest potential prior to production.

PRODUCTION
DSW provides the performance venue, production support, lighting design, production week warm-up classes, media and publicity, and public receptions. Each choreographer receives an honorarium of $500.
