The Annual Alberta Dance Festival has been a highlight of the organization’s programming since Dancers’ Studio West was founded in 1980. Originally conceived by founders Elaine Bowman and and Peter Hoff as Alberta Dance Explosions, the festival continues to provide a singular and prized opportunity for Alberta choreographers and dancers.

In 2011, the two-week event became the Annual Alberta Dance Festival and evolved to include important innovations such as theme-based productions, and new activities in choreographic mentorship and development, music advising, technique training and public forum discussion.

Today’s Festival presents new work by 8 to 10 choreographers who are provided with an Outside Eye feedback process, a 6-day pre-production Creative Intensive program including technique classes and choreographers’ showings, two weekends of performances and numerous critical dialogue exchanges.

The Festival provides an essential experience for both entry-level and mid-career artists. Participating choreographers either live and work in Alberta or originate from the province, maintaining professional connections here. The Festival provides a forum where participating artist build meaningful relationships with colleagues of different levels of experience and from different Canadian dance centres.
